Fields of Athenry 10k 2003
One hundred and sixty-eight athletes turned out this year 30 breaking 40 minutes and 92 breaking the 50 minute barrier. The race was won by the winner of the Longford Marathon earlier this summer. There was a ding-dong battle for second place from the 4KM marker onwards. Competitiors came from as far afield as Belfast, Cavan, Dublin, Kildare, Limerick & Westmeath.
The weather itself was damp and very overcast. It rained before and during the race but it didn’t dampen spirits too much.
The prize-giving ceremoney was held in the palatial settings of St. Mary’s GAA clubhouse outside the town itself, where a warm cup of tea/coffee was on offer to all competitors after the race.
A free woolly hat was given to all starters. Such was the turnout that the organisers ran out of hats well before the starting gun. Anyone who didn’t get a hat on the day, will get one in the next few weeks. Full results will be posted to all competitors and will be placed on the race’s web site over the next few weeks.
